Best Practices and Recommendations for EDID
Below is an article breaking down the use of EDID and what it can help resolve. This article is only applicable to the 2018 series and later. Panels before this still have the EDID standard, but there is no ability to toggle between different versions on those models.
- What is Extended Display Identification Data (EDID)?
- In short EDID data exchange is a way for a display to tell a device what it can do. It tells the device important information like the display's best picture quality and resolution. This helps the device show the best picture possible on the display without the user having to do anything. It makes it easier to use different devices together and reduces the chance of mistakes that could ruin the picture quality or cause other problems.
- What are some common problems that arise with the use of EDID?
- The image not displaying on the screen as expected. This can be caused due to audio and video data being transferred at a higher rate than the EDID version has the ability to pass. There is a toggle to either decrease or increase the EDID version within your Newline panel settings.
- The sound may also not output as expected if you have a media player of any kind connected to the panel.
- If your computer is capable of outputting 4k content at 60hz, but your panel is only displaying 4k at 30hz, there is a chance that the EDID setting is at 1.4, switching this over to 2.0 should allow you to access the full refresh rate available by your personal device as long as your cables are 4k, 60hz rated.
