What are USB Hub limitations?
The "Host Controller" will impose USB limitations. This is to say that USB hub connections are limited to a maximum of five. Once over this limit of five, issues will start to arise with devices connected via USB. We will list some examples below to help illustrate what can cause conflicts with hardware and software limitations set by these controllers.
For all the examples below we will assume all hardware is in good working condition and compatible. The connected computing device will also be referred to as the "Host Controller", this will also count as a USB hub for every example. The Newline panel will always count as three USB hubs; this is due to the layers of information and data utilized by USB technology on the panel in unison with the "Host Controller".
Example 1:
If connecting the "host controller" directly to the panel with a video cable and a USB cable for touch. The "host controller" would recognize four hubs in use (one for the host controller, three for the panel). With this example there should be no issues with USB peripherals while connected to the Newline or Computing device.
Example 2:
If connecting the "host controller" via a USB hub such as this Anker USB Hub. The "Host Controller" would recognize five hubs in use. (one for the host controller, one for the hub, and three for the panel). With this example the "host controller" is at the maximum threshold for USB hubs and everything will still function as intended.
Example 3:
If connecting the "host controller" via a USB dock such as this Dell Thunderbolt Dock. The "Host Controller" would recognize six hubs in use. (one for the host controller, two for the dock, and three for the panel). With this example the "host controller" is past the threshold for USB hubs, with this set up it is expected that loss of data connection between the host controller and any peripherals will occur. The experience can differ depending on what the "Host Controller" gives priority to.
To summarize, the best practice and the industry recommendation is to keep USB hub limitations in mind while configuring your environment. It will help when attempting to limit overall periphral failures.
